CFM Activity Sheet (Day of Fasting and Crossword Puzzle)--March 29, 2020

My apologies to all of you for forgetting to double check that my General Conference packet posted correctly yesterday.  All errors are fixed now and you will find it here. 

Below you will find  the activity sheet (including a crossword puzzle and a coloring page reminder about this Sunday's day for fasting) to go along with this week's CFM reading.

CFM Activity Sheets x2 (for younger and older kids)

Today there are two versions of the activity sheets.  I created one, then decided it was too hard for most kids, so made a younger version with a word search.  Hopefully between the two, you will find one of them perfect for your family.  :)

So, I created these sheets more than a week ago and thought I'd be posting this today from my parents' mission apartment in Paris.   Alas, not only am I  posting this  from home in Pennsylvania, but later today I will be picking my parents up from the airport.  They, along with all senior missionaries and young missionaries with health issues, are being evacuated from Europe.  Their house has tenants living in it, so they will stay with us while they figure out what their next steps will be.  Definitely not quite the spring break we had planned! 

  I think we are all in a little shock of how quickly everything has changed in the last couple of weeks and I hope you are adjusting well to all the life changes.

FOR WORD SEARCH LOVERS AND YOUNGER KIDS: 

I don't have a great quote for you today, but I love the story of the Currant Bush as told by Hugh B. Brown.   It's summarized below and is shown in video form here.    I think it's especially apt for the circumstances of the day and ties in well to the CFM reading for this week.  

 

"THE CURRANT BUSH" originally told by Hugh Brown

"I would like to speak of one particular attitude and practice we need to adopt if we're to meet our Heavenly Father's high expectations. It is this: willingly to accept and even seek corrections. Elder Hugh B. Brown told of purchasing a rundown farm in Canada many years ago. As he went about cleaning up and repairing his property, he came across a currant bush that had grown over six feet high and was yielding no berries.

So he pruned it back drastically, leaving only small stumps. Then he saw a drop like a tear on the top of each of these little stumps, as if the currant bush were crying, and thought he heard it say: "How could you do this to me? I was making such wonderful growth. ... And now you've cut me down. Every plant in the garden will look down on me. ... How could you do this to me? I thought you were the gardener here."

"Look, little currant bush, I am the gardener here, and I know what I want you to be. I [don't] intend you to be a fruit tree or a shade tree. I want you to be a currant bush, and someday, little currant bush, when you are laden with fruit, you are going to say, 'Thank you, Mr. Gardener, for loving me enough to cut me down.'"

Years later, Elder Brown was in line to be promoted to general. But even though he was fully qualified for the promotion, it was denied him because he was a Mormon. Continuing his story, Elder Brown remembered: "I got on the train and started back ... with a broken heart, with bitterness in my soul. ... When I got to my tent, ... I threw my cap on the cot. I clenched my fists, and I shook them at heaven.

I said, 'How could you do this to me, God? I have done everything I could to measure up. ... How could you do this to me?' And then I heard a voice. ... It was my own voice, and the voice said, 'I am the gardener here. I know what I want you to do.' The bitterness went out of my soul, and I fell on my knees by the cot to ask forgiveness for my ungratefulness. ...

And now, almost 50 years later, I look up to [God] and say, 'Thank you, Mr. Gardener, for cutting me down, for loving me enough to hurt me.'" All of us can meet God's high expectations, however great or small our capacity and talent may be".

COME FOLLOW ME CROSSWORD PUZZLE AND COLORING SHEET FOR JACOB 1-4

I hope this blogpost finds you all happy, healthy, and well stocked with toilet paper and hand soap!   We are living in crazy times right now and it's hard not to feel a little alarmed by the whirlwind of fear that seems to be swirling around us.   I hope you find peace and perspective as you study the scriptures this week.   I love the words in Jacob 4:6-10 that remind us that we can have unshaken faith and hope by searching the words of the prophets, by coming unto God with our weaknesses, and by seeking to take our counsel from the Lord. 

"As we think about the future, we should be filled with faith and hope. Always remember that Jesus Christ—the Creator of the universe, the architect of our salvation, and the head of this Church—is in control. "   Elder Ballard {from Face the Future with Faith and Hope, 2012}

What Does it Mean to Live the Doctrine of Christ? (YW and Aaronic Priesthood Lesson)

Me, my daughter, and husband are all separately teaching this lesson on Sunday. Here are a few thoughts on teaching that we’ve gathered in our studies this week.

First, before we really get down to discussing what it means to LIVE the Doctrine of Christ, let’s first discuss what actually is the Doctrine of Christ? Lucky for us, the “Come, Follow Me” reading for this week gives us the answers and in plain terms.   Don't you just love how Nephi uses a variation of the word "PLAIN" three times in two sentences in 2 Nephi 31:2-3?  😂 It's like he really wants us to know that the doctrine of Christ is not meant to be complicated.

  I created this visual, based on the episode of “Don’t Miss This” for this week. {By the way, if you don’t watch or listen to the “Don’t Miss This” podcast yet, you’re missing out! They really add a lot of insight and perspective to my CFM studies each week.}   So, I was going to draw this hand large on the board (or you could have it printed out if you prefer) and have them look up the scriptures and fill in the blanks.  This could be a group activity with the class looking up the scriptures one at a time and filling it in together, or you could have them fill it out individually first, then discuss each part afterward.  I think they definitely should be copying this visual down into their journals as they go.  

Then we were going to go through each of the fingers and fill in the blanks, so it'll look something like this: 

Then we will talk about the center of the hand, because the whole Doctrine of Christ  really does begin and end with Christ.    It is through Him that we have the gifts of faith, repentance, baptism, and the Holy Ghost in the first place.   And it is through His atonement that we can return to live with Him again someday. 

I plan on having a copy of this completed one done for them to tape into their journals.  They could also copy it into their journals from the board if that works better for your class.

I was thinking that we would finish up this part of the discussion with reading Moroni 7:41:“And what is it that ye shall hope for? Behold I say unto you that ye shall have hope through the atonement of Christ and the power of his resurrection, to be raised unto life eternal, and this because of your faith in him according to the promise.”

Then I plan on asking if the Doctrine of Christ sounds familiar to them?   They may recognize that most of it is mentioned in the 4th Article of Faith, and more importantly, it's what they've been learning their whole lives!

 After discussing the simplicity, beauty, and importance of what the Doctrine of Christ is, I thought we'd start talking about what it means to live it.   These two quotes from Elder Ballard's talk (the one mentioned in the lesson) would be a great place to start:

"The best ways for us to see the spiritual purposes of the Church are to live the true, pure, and simple teachings of Christ and also to apply the Savior’s two great commandments: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart. … Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.”   Elder Ballard

" Loving God and loving our neighbors is the doctrinal foundation of ministering; home-centered, Church-supported learning; Sabbath-day spiritual worship; and the work of salvation on both sides of the veil supported in the Relief Societies and the elders quorums. All of these things are based on the divine commandments to love God and to love our neighbors. Can there be anything more basic, more fundamental, and more simple than that?" Elder Ballard

I really want to keep the focus on the plainness and simplicity of the Doctrine of Christ, so my plan was to ask a few questions from the lesson plan after reading the quotes and let that lead where our discussion goes from there.  

•  How do each of these principles of the gospel relate to each other? 
• What blessings do we receive when we follow the doctrine of Christ?

CFM Activity Sheet for 1 Nephi 31-33 (March 8, 2020)

Here is a free double-sided 1/2 page activity sheet to go along with the Come, Follow Me reading for the week of March 2-8, 2020.   It's all about the Doctrine of Christ and I hope will be a good kick-off for discussions in your families and classes.  😀

Come, Follow Me activity sheet for 2 Nephi 26-30 (3/1/2020)

Ahhhh, this week's CFM was a little easier than last week--not only fewer chapters, but far less Isaiah.     Granted, I do like to think I've gained a greater appreciation of Isaiah through the years, but, man, when I'm wading through the middle of 2nd Nephi I do start to yearn for some words of Nephi again.     In the meantime, I keep plugging away hoping that someday (likely in the very distant future) I'll have a perfect understanding of the symbolism and cultural meaning behind Isaiah!

So, in honor of the easier reading this week, I made the word search just a bit easier than usual.   But don't worry....for those of you who like a challenge, I did throw in a bonus word you'll need to figure out first, then find. 


ENRICHMENT IDEAS:    Here's a great talk if you want to read a talk from Elder Bednar on the idea of receiving revelation "line upon line".   And I think it goes well with this FHE lesson about recognizing the spirit. 

"As you ponder the principle of “line upon line, precept upon precept,” you will be able to discern more clearly the consistent help from heaven you have received in your lives. And your faith in the Savior will be stronger, and your hope for the future will be brighter. I pray you will recognize the Lord’s pattern and process for obtaining spiritual knowledge."   David A. Hey!   Do you like this way of posting PDFs?   People seemed to be having so many issues with the way my FHE lessons were posted, I decided to try these in a different way, but I've never heard any feedback from y'all.   Does attaching it via google drive work for you?  

These double-sided activity sheets make for a great quiet sacrament activity and/or review or introduction to the CFM reading for the week.  Hope your families and/or classes are enjoying these!


Are your kids enjoying these?  If so, how old are they?   I handed a couple of these out in church on Sunday and neither child (around 10-years-old) seemed super interested.  Are they too hard?   Is there something I can do to improve them?    I'd love to hear your feedback!

Here is a half-sheet, double-sided activity page, including a  word search and coloring sheet, to go along with 2 Nephi 6-10.    These sheets make for great introductions or reviews to the Come, Follow Me reading for the week or as a quiet activity during sacrament meeting.  Our previous ward used to hand them out to the kids along with the sacrament programs.

It's almost the new year, which means it's time to start studying the Book of Mormon in earnest!   We read the Book of Mormon anyway, but I'm looking forward to adding a new layer to our studies with the "Come, Follow Me" manual.

Finding Answers in the Book of Mormon

I used this as a handout to go with the YW lesson, "Why do we need the Book of Mormon?", but it would also make a great FHE activity for older kids.     The focus of our lesson was that by reading the Book of Mormon, we can find answers to gospel questions, find comfort, and draw nearer to Christ.   I used a lot of the ideas from this site to teach.  

This was meant to be a sort of "homework" assignment, which if they filled out and sent me a picture of  completed, I would bring them a small treat the next week.   I don't usually like to resort to bribery like that, but I felt that the exercise of learning to find answers in the scriptures was valuable enough that I wanted to give them a little extra incentive to do it.

Trials Make Us Stronger FHE Lesson

It's been a while since I posted a lesson here, but I wanted to take this opportunity to check in and share this new lesson that is very applicable to our lives right now.  I don't know how many of you check in on my family blog,  but on January 10th our oldest son (16) was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia (AML) and he has spent almost every day since then in the hospital undergoing heavy duty chemo.   To say that it's been a challenging year so far would be an understatement and I hope you'll understand why I am often unable to respond to my emails right now.    He is currently in his third round of chemo and so far is responding well to treatment, but with as aggressive as it is, we potentially still have a long road in front of us.  We have felt God's love and support through this trial and this family home evening lesson was very meaningful to us.   We especially enjoyed the visualization of the paper airplane object lesson.

Lesson Purpose:  To help family members realize the importance of opposition and adversity in our lives. 

PREPARATION: 
1.  Prepare word strips with the following words:  Day, Night, Freedom, Captivity, Dark, Light, Little, Big, Up, Down, Create, Destroy, Mother, Father, Righteousness, Wickedness, Sister, Brother, Sorrow, Joy, True, False
2.  Gather paper for paper airplanes.  You may also want to practice folding a few paper airplanes prior to the start of FHE. (for object lesson).  Here's a website with some cool airplane patterns. 
3.  Prayerfully study 2 Nephi 2:11-30
4.  Prayerfully study Doctrine and Covenants 122

OPENING PRAYER:

LESSON:   Display the word strips randomly on the floor or table.  Have family members take turns finding pairs of opposites. 

After the activity, read 2 Nephi 2:11 and share with your family the thoughts and feelings you had as you studied the verses previously.  Be sure to point out the fact that opposition was present even in the beginning (verse 15).  Explain that in order for us to have free agency, both good and evil has to exist (verse 16).  Discuss verses 22-25 to help your family understand that opposition is essential in order for Heavenly Father's plan to be fulfilled.  Conclude the discussion by reading verse 27 and emphasizing the fact that we are free to choose for ourselves between good (liberty) and evil (captivity).

Discuss:  Opposition can also make us stronger.and relate the story of Joseph Smith found in D&C 122.  Explain that according to the Lord, every trial he endured was for his own good and gave him experience.  God was always with him and will remain with him forever. 

The trials we face in our lives may be different than Joseph Smith's, but they are for our own good and give us experience.  God will likewise, be with us as we seek him. 

OBJECT LESSON:  To demonstrate how trials can actually make us stronger, hold up a flat piece of paper and try to make if "fly" through the air.  Point out how poorly the paper flies.  Now begin folding and creasing the paper into an airplane.  Explain as you fold the paper that each crease represents a trial (mention possible {or current} trials as you fold).  With each fold (trial) the paper becomes strong until eventually it can fly through the air gracefully.  Our lives are very similar.  Just like the folds make the paper stronger, trials make us stronger.  Some of our trials may seem at the time, but Heavenly Father is always mindful of us.  Each trial that we endure brings greater strength and experience into our lives. 

ACTIVITY:  Pass out paper to everyone and have fun making paper airplanes.  Have a contest to see whose plane flies the farthest, fastest, highest, etc.

Lehi and Nephi File Folders

These file folder scenes are awesome!  I have no idea where the fun artwork came from, but these are the perfect thing for teaching your family the stories of Nephi and Lehi!  Just mount the scenes inside of a file folder, laminate the folders and the figures, then use sticky back Velcro to attach everything.   (NOTE:  Some of the  figures  are repeated, as they are meant to be used on more than one flannel board scene at a time.)

Apostle Wheel and Latter-day Prophet Matching Game

Here are a couple of activities that we love for General Conference. 

Print two sets of the matching game and play as per a normal matching game.   Or for an extra challenge hand out a set of cards to each child and have them listen for each latter-day prophet's name mentioned during conference. As each name is mentioned, they can hang the picture on the wall (or add to a notebook or something)  You can have a special treat waiting when they've all been mentioned.

Latter-day Prophet Matching Game


This Apostle Wheel is in my General Conference Activity Packet, but since it's buried in the middle, I thought I'd publish it by itself for those who don't want the whole packet.  My kids absolutely LOVE this apostle wheel and I like that it gives them practice recognizing the apostles faces  and names.

I know it's been a while, but I'm here today with another of our favorite family home evening lessons.  I was actually surprised that I hadn't already digitized it, since it is so well-loved at our house!  The modern day goliath activity is an activity your family won't soon forget as they hurl their "stones" (marshmallows) at the the Goliath (who is covered with some ideas of  personal "goliaths" they may be facing).  It opened a lot of discussion fodder at our house and I don't think they'll never look at courage/choosing the right the same way again.  :)

Now I've been excited to get back into the swing of regular posting again, but after re-realizing how much time it takes me to type up individual lessons, at this point I'm going to try to commit to posting something each week.  That something might be a full lesson, a scripture story, a fun activity, or just some cool random visual aids I have floating around.  It is my hope that getting back into the swing of it again will get my enthusiasm and creativity flowing again.  :)

I've had several people contact me about including black and white originals where possible in the lessons.  I do have originals for many of my lessons and I do plan to include them in future lessons, but this one is one which I don't have originals for.
