Self Care Relief Society Activity

 I now have the calling of being the Relief Society Activity Leader, which gives me the responsibility of planning and executing meaningful gatherings for the women in our ward on a regular basis.   Party planning is NOT something I enjoy whatsoever, so it was with a good deal of trepidation that I embarked on this calling.  In about the 6 months since I was called, it's proven to be a calling that challenges me and has brought me to tears more than once, but it's also been one that has proven rewarding to me as we've gathered, learned, and connected together.

 I know that this blog has turned into a hodgepodge of content--all  church related, but pretty varied besides that--but I thought it might be fun to share some of my successful activities here. 

 When I plan activities, I have a few "rules" I like to keep in mind to help me plan a well-rounded activity. 

Rule #1:   SPIRITUAL ASPECT.   I want every activity to have at least a 5 minute spiritual message at the beginning to invite the spirit and to tie whatever we do that night to Christ.

Rule #2:   CONNECTION.  I want every activity to foster connection among the sisters in some shape or form.  As a newbie to the ward, this is ultra important for me, because there really is NO other forum for connection built in to our church lives anymore.  Our ward only has activities once or twice a year, our ward is not naturally all that social or friendly,  and Sundays these days offer little time for anything other than gospel instruction.  In the three activities we've done so far, we've had one activity that was all about getting to know each other, another one where we had time during a dinner to chat with our table-mates, and one where we had an extra 15-20 minutes built onto the end for people to sit and chat with each other. 

Rule #3:  VARIETY.  I want to offer a variety of types of activities, so as to create the widest appeal possible for the sisters.  I know that there is no way to please everyone and I also know that different types of activities will appeal to different people, so I want to make sure that we are covering our bases and offering enough variety that  most people will be drawn to attend at least one activity during the year. 

Rule #4:  MARKETING.  I feel like marketing the activities is a HUGE part of my job, because I never want to hear that someone  wanted to come to an activity but didn't know about it.  Marketing in our ward includes handing fliers out at church, making sure it's included in the ward bulletin each week, making sure it gets announced in sacrament meeting and other meetings,  sending out an email from the RS, and since we live in Utah now, also putting up signs in the neighborhood and dropping fliers off at everyone's doors.   If someone didn't get the memo after all that, then I can rest easy knowing that I did my best to let everyone know at least! 

So, here's a glimpse of our activity earlier this month: 

Here's the digital flier I created on Canva to include in the RS email and the ward bulletin (which is digital in our ward). 

I also printed them (just on my home printer) and handed them out before sacrament meeting a few weeks before the activity.  That way, people got it on their calendar.

 Here's a summary of what we did: 

1.  We set up 3 rooms near each other in the church.   A MUNCH and MINGLE room with chairs set up in a semi-circle and a table full of healthy snacks.   We also had a MEDITATION room with a few soft chairs set up around the edge and a bunch of blankets for people to sit on the floor.   The third room was the MOVEMENT room, which was the RS room with everything moved out of the way

2.  We started the night in the  MUNCH and MINGLE room.  Someone shared a beautiful spiritual message based on these two articles (this one and this one).   The main idea being that we need to figuratively put our own masks on first, so that we can be our best selves for the people around us.  That means taking care of our spirits, our bodies, and our minds. 

3.  When the spiritual message was done, we split the room in two and sent half of the group off to the MEDITATION room and half to the MOVEMENT room.   Each class was about 15 minutes long. 

4.  The MEDITATION room was quiet, dimly lit and had blankets spread out on the floor.  A woman from the ward led us in mindful meditation.   It was very relaxing and perfect for the end of a long day. 

The MOVEMENT room was also dimly lit and everyone received glowstick bracelets upon entering (purchased from The Dollar Tree).  A woman who is an exercise instructor talked a little about how important it is to move our bodies, then led us in super fun, laid back dancing.   Being someone who is clumsy and has zero sense of rhythm, it was a fun way to dance without feeling like anyone was actually watching me! 

5.  After the first class ended, everyone switched places to give the other class a try.   When both classes were done, we all headed back to the MUNCH and MINGLE room to eat healthy snacks and to socialize. 

It seemed like everyone loved the laid-back opportunity to munch and mingle and it made me smile to see so many people just enjoying being together. 

In the end there were over 30 people who came and it seemed like everyone enjoyed themselves.  The best compliment I got about it was from someone who has zero idea that I have anything to do with planning the activities and she told me that not only did she have fun, but that  it was a valuable reminder to her to "put her own mask on first".   

All in all, a great night!

Come, Follow Me Activity Sheet about the Living Water of Christ for February 6-12, 2023 {John 2-4}

 "Ye must be born again."

The concept that stood out to me in this week's CFM reading was that Christ is the "Living Water".   It's a powerful concept to realize that we can spend our whole lives trying to meet our physical needs and yet we will still be empty if we neglect to nourish our spirits.   Our spirits crave and need Christ and it is up to us to find that source of the "Living Water".  We can't just sit back and expect to have it handed to us at church; it has to be an active process of finding, seeking, AND partaking of it.  This week's activity sheet is meant to reinforce those concepts and to provide a jumping off point for talking about it in more depth.  See below for a teaching idea and a relevant quote.

ANOTHER TEACHING IDEA:  (adapted from LDSLiving)
Have a pitcher filled with water and empty glasses for each person.  In one of the cups, put a slip of paper with the scripture John 4:13-14 written on it.  Have each person share a time when they were especially thirsty and ask how they felt.  Go on to discuss how important water is to our bodies and how quickly we would die if we didn't have access to water.  Then pour everyone a glass of water...EXCEPT for the one person who has the scripture in their cup.    Use this as a launching point to discuss how Christ is every bit as important to our spirits as water is to our physical bodies.

How do you use these activity sheets?   I think they're perfect as a quiet sacrament meeting activity or as a discussion sparker at home or in a classroom.   Since my kids are older, I'll have them call out when they find words and then we discuss them in more detail.  In a  class, I'll give them a few minutes to work on it, then go through them and use them as a discussion starting off point.

Activity Sheet for Kids--"Come, Follow Me" (Acts 22-28)

"And now I exhort you to be of good cheer..."  Acts 27:22

This week's "Come, Follow Me" reading is full of good meat to discuss.   For many years of my life I totally believed that if you only did what was right, your life would be blessed.   That is true, but not in the naive way I thought it was for so long.   Here was Paul who'd completely changed his life and dedicated it to sharing the gospel, and yet he still faced some really hard things.  Did God make the hard things disappear or not happen?  No, but he did lighten those burdens and give Paul the wisdom and the strength to face them.  It really is the story of my life.   The hard things happen, but in them we've found a beauty and depth to life that have helped us to become who we are.   Not that we'd ever want to repeat them or to wish them on anyone else, but now that they're woven into the fabric of who we are, I can look back on them with a sense gratitude. 





Hope your families/classes are enjoying these "Come, Follow Me" activity sheets!   I keep hearing that the word searches are a favorite, so I added one again this week.  :)

Activity Sheet for Kids for "Come, Follow Me" (Acts 16-21)

I guess I don't have very many people who look at this blog anymore, but since I'm making these activity sheets every week anyway, I guess I'll keep publishing them here.    Hopefully someone out there will enjoy using them in their families or classes.   



In the meantime, our family is moving to Pennsylvania this week!   We've lived here in the DC area for 20+ years, so this is a HUGE move for our family.    We are a little nervous, sad to be leaving somewhere where our roots run so deep, but also excited for a fresh start somewhere new.

Printable Patriotic Song Crossword Puzzle for Kids

Two quick things....

1.   I make the ward bulletins for our ward now and include a children's activity sheet each week.    This crossword puzzle is one I created myself and thought would be fun to share with all of you.  It uses the hymn book and would make for a good activity during sacrament meeting or for a family home evening around Independence Day.

2.  Also....I figured out how to post a PDF without using Scribd!  Let me know if this format works for you.   If it's easy to use,  I think I'm going make my way through all the family home evening lessons on here and see if I can post them the same way.  It might take me a while, but if it makes them easier to use it will be worth it!

Napoleon Dynamite Mutual Activity

When you've been helping plan youth activities for almost five years, sometimes it's hard to come up with new and creative ideas.   We were in charge of the combined activity this month and couldn't come up with any ideas we all liked.  We've done a few meaningful combined activities lately, so wanted to make this a fun one.   We were planning on it being a game night of some kind, but had trouble focusing in on which games to do and how to structure it for the 50-60 youth that would come.    Finally, my counselor mentioned potentially making it a Napoleon Dynamite activity and suddenly it all clicked together.  We planned and pulled it together in a weekend, spent little money, and everyone had a fantastic time.

First off, I sent this email (linked in a google doc) to tell everyone about the activity and invite them to dress the part.      We offered prizes (chapstick) for the best costumes.  :)

We started the night by showing some favorite clips of the movie, then went to the gym and explained each of the stations, then let them go to it. :)   We thought about assigning them groups and making it more structured, but worried that each station would take a different amount of time, so we just let them do it at their own pace.  

You'll want a table and a little sign for each station explaining what it is, along with a leader to instruct what to do (and to garner enthusiasm).    Not every station will need a separate leader, but you'll want some oversight to keep it from getting too crazy, especially if you have a large group like we do.

STATION #1: HELP PEDRO ASK SUMMER TO THE DANCE (CUPCAKE DECORATING)--

They got to design their own "cake" to help Pedro ask Summer to the dance and then eat it or save it for when we served the snacks later. Most people ate it on the spot...hahah!

Materials needed: unfrosted cupcakes, a big bowl of white frosting, sprinkles, red gel decorating frosting, and a picture of the cake Pedro made for Summer.

STATION #2: SKETCH A FRIEND  (based on the sketch Napoleon did for Trisha)--

At the beginning of the activity when we were all still gathered we had everyone put their name in a bowl. Then when you arrive to the station you draw a name, write that person's name on the back of the paper, then sketch them. After the sketches were done, we hung them up, so everyone could guess who was who. This was probably their favorite activity of the night!

Materials needed: blank sheets of paper, pencils, and maybe a picture of the sketch Napoleon did for Trisha

STATION #3: FEED TINA THE CASSEROLE

Essentially instead of "pin the tail on the donkey", people were trying to feed Tina the casserole while blindfolded.

Materials needed: a large picture or drawing of a llama, a proportionately sized picture of a casserole, blindfold, tape

STATION #4: GLAMOUR SHOTS BY DEB

We had one of our leaders dressed like Deb and would take pictures of people with the tablecloth as the backdrop. She talked like Deb and had them do the awkward glamour shot poses. We will show the pictures at a later activity.

Materials needed: tablecloth (hung over a portable chalkboard), camera, props (if desired).

My counselor has all the official glamour shots on her computer, but this shows the general set-up of what we did.   The pictures were HILARIOUS! 

STATION #5: NAPOLEON TRIVIA:

Materials needed: Copies of a fill in the blank Napoleon quote page (HERE IS THE LINK), pens

STATION #6: HAPPY HANDS CLUB:

Materials needed: An enthusiastic leader and a video of the Happy Hands club performing, "Love is a Rose"

OR you could have someone teaching the Napoleon dance

STATION #7:  MAKE A SIGN FOR PRESIDENT WHEATLEY--

This wouldn't work for most wards, but our stake president happens to be President Wheatley, so we had everyone make a sign and write nice notes to President Wheatley (instead of mean ones to Summer Wheatley).

STATION #8:   TETHERBALL

Unsurprisingly, this was a big hit!!!

STATION #9:   SNACKS: tots, quesadillas, and cupcakes served on lunch trays!

Printable Georgetown Photo Scavenger Hunt

In the summertime, it's fun to mix things up and have a mutual activity that we wouldn't normally be able to do on a school night.  My Laurels decided that an excursion to Georgetown would be just the ticket for our last summer mutual before our stake's family friendly month kicked in.  We'd explore a little together, then get a treat.    I researched at length to find a pre-made scavenger hunt that we could use as our framework for exploring,  but all I could find were hunts created by tour companies that charged for them.  So I decided to create one myself and share it here on the blog....easily printable and totally free!    Perfect for youth groups, families, and tourists!    

We  just had a great time just exploring Georgetown together, but  for larger groups you could split into teams and add a competitive element to it.   Either way, this would  make for a fun family home evening activity for YSAs or families with older kids in the DC area.      Have fun!    

Georgetown Photo Scavenger Hunt by Lara Goold

#ShareGoodness YW activity

We recently had a very fun mutual night activity that the young women really enjoyed.  They made "Share Goodness" posters for all the young men in our ward, where on each poster was a picture of the young man surrounded by sincere compliments that the young women had written.   They made 27 posters and presented them at the end of church the following Sunday.   

We kept the activity a total secret beforehand, so that the girls had no idea what we were doing and thereby couldn't accidentally ruin the surprise for the boys.    

We completed the following prep work beforehand:

1.  Bought white posterboard, half sheet per boy

2.  got a bunch of colored sharpies

3.  Took and/or collected pictures of all the boys (I took some at mutual, collected some from Facebook, and others from parents)

4.  cut the posterboards in half

 At mutual, we first watched this video:    

Then we introduced the activity by telling them that we were going to "Share Goodness" with the Young Men by making them each a #sharegoodness poster.    We talked about how to think of sincere and specific compliments that would build them up.  We emphasized that they should not focus on physical or frivolous compliments, such as clothing or looks, but on character traits and talents.   Essentially we asked them to think of the kind of compliments they would most like to hear. 

Here is my son's poster:    

We had the Beehives make the Deacons' posters, the Mia Maids made the Teachers', and the Laurels made the Priests'.   On each poster, they hot glued on the picture, wrote the boy's name on top, and then wrote "#sharegoodness" on the bottom.    Then  with different colored sharpies, they went around the room and wrote compliments on each poster.   

To  add variety, we regathered together as a group for the last 15-minutes, so that everyone could write on anyone else's  poster from another age group.    I then took the posters home and, with the help of my daughters and husband, filled in a few compliments on those that needed a little something extra.    For instance, one boy's poster was filled with compliments all about his humor and little else.  I wanted to make sure that he had a few more that would be more meaningful.  Additionally there was one boy that doesn't come often and the girls were less sure what to write on his, so we filled his in with a few more of our own.   

 It was a joy to see the young men's faces when we presented them their posters and I had a couple of young men's parents let me know how meaningful it was to their boys.     

All in all, it was a very rewarding experience for the young women and they definitely felt the joy of sharing goodness and building others up,  and that in and of itself is reward enough.   However, I won't lie.  I think a lot of them are secretly hoping the boys will return the favor someday.   

Easy Last Minute Youth Activity or FHE Lesson

Need an idea for a last minute youth activity or FHE lesson that doesn't take much prep work?   This activity is easy to pull off,  fun for the participants, and thought provoking enough to make it meaningful as well.

Gospel Analogy Skits

Prep:   (5 minutes) Gather about 15 random items from around the house.    Some good items might include a flashlight, bottle of aloe vera, a clock, a baby bib, a towel, a can of food, a blanket, a hat, an eraser, etc.

Divide  into groups of 2-3 people, or if doing with a small group, have individuals do it themselves.

Without giving any directions, have every group/individual come pick one of the random items.

Talk for just a minute about the soda can analogy, then challenge them to find their own gospel analogy  with the object they've picked and then present it to the group as a 2-minute skit or commercial.   Emphasize that it does not need to be long.  

Give them pens, paper, and 10-15 minutes for planning.

Have them come to the front of the room and perform their skits. I highly recommend doing your own skit too.   They love watching their leaders act silly and it gives them a glimpse of how to do it!  Encourage group participation, clapping, etc….make it fun.

We got some very insightful gospel analogies and even had time to do another round, which we deemed the "speed round" because everyone only got 2 minutes to plan.

It was a great last-minute activity that was also fun and memorable!

Here are some of the analogies we came up with:

Slinky--When you pull it too far it is weak and shapeless, but when you push it together it is strong and has a point of focus.   If we prioritize our lives well, we can be like the strong and focused slinky.

Flashlight--We can bring light to a dark world with our good examples.

Bib--When we wear the "Super Duper Handy Dandy Bib of the Gospel" we can resist the stains of the world.

Aloe vera--The gospel can bring us soothing and healing when we are feeling spiritually burned.

Clock--We sometimes get caught up in the world's timing and thinking that God is not answering our prayers, etc., but when we understand the eternal perspective of God, we know that God's timing is all we need to worry about.

Bubbles--The atonement of Christ can take away the burden of sin and help us to feel the lightness of forgiveness.

Can of pumpkin--The can doesn't look like much and neither does the pumpkin inside, but when you follow a recipe and mix it up with the right ingredients,  you can make a delicious treat.   This was compared to how our lives are and when we follow the "recipe" for living the gospel, God will bless us and make our lives so much sweeter.

First aid kit--When we are feeling hurt, we can turn to the first aid kit of the gospel and find healing for our spiritual wounds.   

Take an Easter Walk with Jesus

“Take an Easter Walk with Jesus”—walk outside, and find and place the following items in a bag while you talk more about Jesus’ atonement.  We do this early in the day as a prelude to an Easter  family home evening.  

A BRANCH—a week before his crucifixion, as Christ entered the city, the people waved branches from palm trees

SOMETHING PRICKLY—his “crown” was made of thorns

A PIECE OF WOOD—for it was out of wood his cross was made

SOMETHING NO LONGER ALIVE—for the Savior truly died

WHITE LINEN (may need to find this at home) —Christ was wrapped in white linen before being placed in the tomb

A STONE –it was a huge stone at the opening of the tomb that the angel removed

SOMETHING LIVING—to remind us that Christ surely lives.  He died and was resurrected. 

 Some of the beautiful sights we saw along the way that gave us the opportunity about the beauty of God's creations.

Apostle Wheel and Latter-day Prophet Matching Game

Here are a couple of activities that we love for General Conference. 

Print two sets of the matching game and play as per a normal matching game.   Or for an extra challenge hand out a set of cards to each child and have them listen for each latter-day prophet's name mentioned during conference. As each name is mentioned, they can hang the picture on the wall (or add to a notebook or something)  You can have a special treat waiting when they've all been mentioned.

I know it's been a while, but I'm here today with another of our favorite family home evening lessons.  I was actually surprised that I hadn't already digitized it, since it is so well-loved at our house!  The modern day goliath activity is an activity your family won't soon forget as they hurl their "stones" (marshmallows) at the the Goliath (who is covered with some ideas of  personal "goliaths" they may be facing).  It opened a lot of discussion fodder at our house and I don't think they'll never look at courage/choosing the right the same way again.  :)

Now I've been excited to get back into the swing of regular posting again, but after re-realizing how much time it takes me to type up individual lessons, at this point I'm going to try to commit to posting something each week.  That something might be a full lesson, a scripture story, a fun activity, or just some cool random visual aids I have floating around.  It is my hope that getting back into the swing of it again will get my enthusiasm and creativity flowing again.  :)

I've had several people contact me about including black and white originals where possible in the lessons.  I do have originals for many of my lessons and I do plan to include them in future lessons, but this one is one which I don't have originals for.

It has been brought to my attention that some of my older lessons have been moved into the Scribd archives, which means that you have to pay a fee to download them.  The fee is nominal ($5 to download as many lessons as you want in 24-hours), but if you'd like me to send one or two of them to you as an email file let me know.  Unfortunately, due to my slow internet connection (30+ minutes to upload each lesson), I would not be able to email more than one or two lessons to you, but I'd be happy to do it if you let me know.

Fasting FHE Lesson

This lesson was one of the first lessons I created when I started participating in a FHE group.  I love the role play in this that gives a little synopsis on fasting (and no I did not change the names).  That fasting wheel was one of my pride and joys when I first created it.  It was based on a similar wheel I found in the Friend magazine and I just changed the pictures and words to fit with my own lesson.  I hope you enjoy it!
