Taking Upon Us Christ's Name Lesson Ideas and an Activity Sheet for D&C 20-22 (Mar 16)

This blogpost features a half-sheet activity page to complement the Come Follow Me (CFM) reading for  March 10-16, which includes Doctrine and Covenants sections 20-22.    Click here for an index and links to my CFM blogposts for other weeks.

LESSON IDEAS FOR TAKING CHRIST'S NAME UPON YOU (D&C 20:77)

Below you will find some discussion points and activities that you could incorporate into your lesson on this topic.  Which ones you use and how the discussion goes will very much depend on the age and level of understanding of your class.  Use the Spirit as you prepare and teach this lesson.

Attention Activity:

Share the meaning behind your name or the name of a family member.  Share how it was chosen and what it meant (even if it's just because your parents just really liked the name).  Ask your class members if they know if they are named after anyone or if their name was chosen for a special reason.  Allow for a few minutes for class members to share if they choose.

Share:
Share a story of how someone heard what your last name was and assumed they knew things about you...maybe because they knew one of your siblings or your grandparents.  You can share how the assumptions they made were or were not true.    In my own case, a lot of people knew my husband's grandparents with the same last name as ours when we moved to DC.  They were a very musical family and often assumed that we must musical too.

Ask:
Have you ever been somewhere and someone found out your name and assumed things about you?   How did it make you feel?   How would you feel if someone assumed negative things about you just because of someone you know?

Discuss:
Talk about how it can be a good thing or a bad thing when people make assumptions about you based on who you are affiliated with.

Ask and discuss:
What does it mean to be a Christian?  Being a Christian means taking Christ's name upon us.   Depending on the age of your students, this could be a great opportunity to talk about the fact that there are people who don't believe that members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are Christian because of our views of the Godhead.   But not only does the name of our church bear the name of Christ, but that we make a covenant each week to take His name upon us.

Read D&C 20:77 and discuss:
Discuss what it means  to  take upon themselves the name of Jesus Christ. How does taking His name influence who we are and the way we try to live?   How can we show to others that we are Christians by the way we live our lives?

Scripture Activity:

Depending on the age of your students, either have them independently or in groups, read Mosiah 5:7 together, then skim the rest of Mosiah 5 and search for a few reasons why it’s important to take the name of Christ upon us.  You may want to give a little background about what this chapter is about first:  about how King Benjamin taught his people about Christ and how many of them wanted to join with him and take Christ's name upon them.

Here are a few examples of things to look for (any of these would make for more discussions if the Spirit leads you in that direction):

verse 7--hearts are changed
7-become his sons and daughters
8--only way to salvation
9-be on the right hand of God
10- if you don't, then you'll be on the left hand of God
12-you will know God's voice
15-brought to heaven
have everlasting salvation and eternal life

Video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_92mKlQOlk
This is a great video that shows an example from President Monson's life about a time when he had to stand alone in his beliefs and that people were very much looking to him to learn what a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stands for.

Relate:

After watching the video, discuss examples from the scriptures of people who had taken upon them the name of Christ and ended up standing alone in their beliefs. (Abinadi, Samuel the Lamanite, Jonah, Paul, etc )

Read  quote #1 :
#1 “We promise to take His name upon us. That means we must see ourselves as His. We will put Him first in our lives. We will want what He wants rather than what we want or what the world teaches us to want” Henry B. Eyring

Group Activity:
Divide the class into three groups, and ask each group to discuss one of the following questions: What does it mean to see ourselves as Christ’s? How do we put the Savior first in our lives? What does it mean to want what the Savior wants? Ask one person from each group to share with the rest of the class what her group discussed.

QUOTES ABOUT TAKING THE NAME OF CHRIST UPON US

#1 “We promise to take His name upon us. That means we must see ourselves as His. We will put Him first in our lives. We will want what He wants rather than what we want or what the world teaches us to want” Henry B. Eyring

#2 “Our willingness to take upon us the name of Jesus Christ affirms our commitment to do all that we can to be counted among those whom he will choose to stand at his right hand and be called by his name at the last day. In this sacred sense, our witness that we are willing to take upon us the name of Jesus Christ constitutes our declaration of candidacy for exaltation in the celestial kingdom. Exaltation is eternal life, “the greatest of all the gifts of God.”  Dallin H. Oaks

#3 " For we labor diligently to write, to persuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do." 2 Nephi 25:23

#4 Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death, that ye may be redeemed of God, and be numbered with those of the first resurrection, that ye may have eternal life"— Mosiah 18:9

#5 "Yea, blessed is this people who are willing to bear my name; for in my name shall they be called; and they are mine." Mosiah 26:18

PRINTABLE CFM ACTIVITY SHEET
These activity sheets are designed to print double-sided and cut in half.  They're perfect for reviewing or introducing the content found in the Come, Follow Me reading each week and would be great used in a classroom or home setting.   I have no children at home, nor do I have a calling working with youth, so I copy these to be handed out with the sacrament programs each week.  Kids, teens, and adults enjoy them. 😊

HERE IS THE LINK TO THIS WEEK'S ACTIVITY SHEET (in case it's not showing below)

2020 Come, Follow Me --Introduction to the Book of Mormon (1/5/20)

It's almost the new year, which means it's time to start studying the Book of Mormon in earnest!   We read the Book of Mormon anyway, but I'm looking forward to adding a new layer to our studies with the "Come, Follow Me" manual.

I've created this page to be a fun way to talk about the Introduction of the Book of Mormon, as well as just a way to help them review the books in the Book of Mormon.

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and a very happy 2020!

Come Follow Me Word Search and Coloring Page for James (11/27/19)

Here is the Come, Follow Me activity page for this week--complete with a coloring page and original word search!     They make for great review/quiet activities for kids and teens.  I use them with my family, in classes that I teach, and as a quiet activity to be handed out with the Sunday program.

I love these chapters and found lots of nuggets I want to discuss and study further.     I especially love the promise in James 4:8, "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you..."  I feel like ultimately that's really one of the main goals of this life--finding time in amongst the busyness of daily living to draw nigh to God.  And it's one of the biggest challenges I face and I'm realizing that there's no way to do it without a very deliberate slowing down and stepping back on my part to allow myself to invite and to feel His presence.

I hope you all have a wonderful week!

Come, Follow Me Activity Sheet for Kids -- Acts 10-15 (July 15-21)

Did you enjoy last week's sheet?       My kids are older now, but love these little activity pages as a Come, Follow Me review each week.

Let me know if your kids have types of activities they'd like included.    Or if there's something I can do to make them easier to print and use.

Hope you're having a marvelous summer!  💖

Teaching Kids About Sex From a Gospel Perspective (FHE Lesson)

First off, I have to say that I firmly believe that teaching kids about sex is not a one time deal.  In this sex saturated day and age, we need to have an open line of communication with our children, so that they are not afraid to come to us when they have questions.   This lesson, in my opinion, is a conversation starter.  It's a way to teach the basics from a positive, gospel perspective and to let our kids know that we're not afraid to talk about a sensitive subject.

This lesson was one I received in a FHE exchange group several years ago.  I was totally amazed that someone would tackle such a weighty topic, but I've been forever grateful that she did.  It has been such an excellent resource for our family and it's by far my most lent out lesson.

First thing you need to do (after you print out the lesson) is order this book from Amazon (or check it out from the library):

The Wonderful Way That Babies Are Made
,
(If you store your lessons in manila envelopes like I do, I love that this book is perfectly sized to slip right inside.  That means it's out of sight from the kids and is always easily accessed when we need it.)
This book teaches about sex from a Christian (but non-LDS) perspective and is filled with beautiful illustrations.  My favorite part about this particular book is that there are two levels to it:  On each page you'll find larger print with text geared towards younger children (under 8), while the smaller text is more detailed and thorough information meant for older kids (8+).

The lesson outline provides the background and the gospel perspective on sex while the book is where the details of sex will be shared.

Also included in the lesson are guidelines for determining proper timing of discussions and a recommend resource page for books and articles.

Sacrament--Remembering Jesus FHE Lesson

Here is a lesson for teaching kids to keep their hearts and minds focused on the Savior as they partake of the sacrament.  We love the cute story that shows what some different children are thinking about.  Hope you had a wonderful Conference weekend!

Latter-day Prophet FHE Lesson (Preparing for General Conference)

This lesson is a great one to use before General Conference.  It teaches about what a blessing it is to have a prophet on the earth today.  My kids really connect with the whole "watchman on the tower" concept.

It is my understanding that some people have issues printing the lessons, but I've heard that it is much more effective to get a free account with Scribd and download the lessons as PDF files before printing them off.

Ten Commandments FHE Lesson

This lesson on the 10 Commandments is the last of my back-up lessons I had saved for a crazy day and today definitely qualifies us for crazy day status.   I like this lesson because it teaches us about the history of the 10 commandments AND how they relate to us in modern day.  My kids love the participation story and I love the matching game where they get to match the ancient commandment to a way they can live it today.

"Zipping Your Lips Against Profanity" FHE Lesson

***If you're having trouble viewing/downloading/printing these lessons, feel free to email me at wawadehut@gmail.com and I will email you the PDF files. ***

This lesson is designed to teach family members that when they use bad words (whether they be swear words, potty language,  taking the Lord’s name in vain, or just speaking unkindly to others) that they are offending other people and more importantly the Lord. My kids think this lesson is wildly funny and combined with the message that it teaches, this is a fun and valuable lesson for children to learn young.

This is one of the first FHE lessons I ever created and it still holds a special place in my heart. I love the story, "Going to the Father for Help" and the principle that it teaches that they can pray anytime, anywhere.

"Love At Home" FHE Lesson

I thought this lesson would be quite fitting with the upcoming lovey dovey holiday later this week.  I think sometimes we forget that the most important place to show love is right in our own homes.  I know that with 5 kids, including a teenage boy and almost teen girl, we need all the help we can get in this area.  In fact, typing up this lesson and hearing my kids scream in the background, made me realize it's high time for us to have this lesson again.  I think I'll have Cami teach it.

Friendship FHE Lesson

***If you're having trouble viewing/downloading/printing these lessons, feel free to email me at wawadehut@gmail.com and I will email you the PDF files. ***

I picked this lesson topic in honor of Valentine's Day which is coming soon.

This lesson is for teaching your children the importance of choosing good friends and being a good friend.  I know I say this every week, but this is also one of our favorite lessons and I feel it is a very valuable concept for kids to learn.   Hope your Monday was much more relaxing than mine!  :)

Preparing for the Second Coming FHE Lesson

***If you're having trouble viewing/downloading/printing these lessons, feel free to email me at wawadehut@gmail.com and I will email you the PDF files. ***

This lesson was one of my first ones that I ever created and it's still one of our favorites.  I love the quote from Spencer W Kimball referring to the parable of the Ten Virgins:

"The foolish asked the others to share their oil, but spiritual preparedness cannot be shared in an instant. . . . This was not selfishness or unkindness. The kind of oil that is needed to illuminate the way and light up the darkness is not shareable. . . . In our lives the oil of preparedness is accumulated drop by drop in righteous living."

The drop by drop concept is one I find very comforting, as it seems so much more attainable than instant perfection and  I think it's important for children not to be overwhelmed by such big concepts as preparing for the Second Coming.  The lamp/oil drop activity in here is perfect for illustrating that concept.

My kids also really love that game.  Back in the day I hand colored 22 of those for my FHE groups.  I think it was shortly thereafter that I figured out how to use the inkjet refill kits for my printer cartridges.  I hope you enjoy this as much as we have.  :)

I am a Child of God FHE Lesson

I really like to use this lesson at the beginning of each year.  I feel like kids (and teens) need constant reminders that they're truly children of God.  This simple truth embedded deep in their hearts is one that will help them immeasurably through the trials they may face in their lives.

Recognizing the Spirit FHE Lesson

This lesson is one I received from a FHE lesson exchange group several years ago.  It is among my most well-used lessons and I love the simple, yet invaluable concept it teaches---learning to recognize the spirit in your life.

Christmas Eve Family Devotional Booklet

***If you're having trouble viewing/downloading/printing these lessons, feel free to email me at wawadehut@gmail.com and I will email you the PDF files. ***

This booklet is designed to be an outline for a Christmas Eve devotional for your family.  It is filled with scriptures, songs, and lovely pictures and makes for a wonderful Christmas Eve tradition.

For our family I printed off enough copies that there would be one copy for every two people.  It's a tradition that my family looks forward to each Christmas Eve and I feel really helps invite the spirit of Christ into our home.   It takes about 30-45 minutes in its entirety (singing first verses only).  Sometimes we skip songs if the kids are getting restless.

I cannot take credit for the design of these booklets as I merely copied them from my friend.  I do ask that these only be copied for personal use.

I hope you enjoy them as much as we have.    Click here to check out more ready-to-print FHE lessons.

Reverence FHE Lesson

***If you're having trouble viewing/downloading/printing these lessons, feel free to email me at wawadehut@gmail.com and I will email you the PDF files. ***

This is one of those lessons that we have to use over and over again at our house and unfortunately  not just for the younger kids.
My kids adore the story, "Why Animals Can't Go to Primary" with its adorable flannel board figures and   the cute reverence puzzles are a fun activity in and of themselves for the younger kids.  The best part is, is that after the lesson they're always right on target for what reverence is all about.

REVERENCE FHE LESSON

I hope you're enjoying these Monday FHE lesson posts!   It's sure fun being able to share some of our favorite lessons with all of you!

PS  You'll have to let me know if you have any topic requests and I'll see if I can help you out.
